As the leader of Discovery’s Advanced Technology & Development team, Josh Derby builds new technology and software solutions for Discovery’s global portfolio of networks. Josh leads Discovery’s internal R&D team as well as heading up Discovery’s cloud-based supply chain initiatives in his role within the company’s Global Content Solutions team. Josh has been part of many technological evolutions in his 20 years at Discovery. He has played major roles in Discovery’s transition from SD to HD, from tape-based to file-based, and now from on-premise workflows to the cloud.

Josh ran Discovery’s QC, Media Operations, and technical training groups before moving into the company’s internal R&D team in 2007. In 2015 he took on a new role, leading a cross-functional team of R&D, software development, and process management in designing Discovery’s cloud-based media supply chain. Josh now leads the R&D group as well as three agile software development teams focused on building Discovery’s global content supply chain. Josh is a leading voice within the industry on media supply chain technology and has presented and published at SMPTE, IBC, NAB, TV Technology, and many other industry conferences and events.

Derby holds a bachelor’s degree in Media Arts and Design with concentrations in television production and digital audio production from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In his spare time, he’s a father of three, competitive fencer, burrito enthusiast, musician, and a dejected Orioles baseball fan.
